Lord Provosts Christmas Lunch in the City Chambers



Thursday 10th December
Tea Dance at the Queen's Hotel
Menu Dovetail of Melon; Tomato & Basil soup; Traditional Roast Turkey or Poached Fillet Scottish
Salmon; Christmas Pudding; Raspberry Cream Cheese Gateau and finally tea and coffee with dark
chocolate mints.
The meal and the music made for a great afternoons entertainment.

Thursday 3rd December Clumembers celebrated Christmas a little early today with mince pies and
Christmas pudding. There four Christmas draws the first for £25 won by Bill Blyth; second for £20
won by Margaret Yule; third was a plant donated by Peter & Wilma Whyte and won by Christine Blyth
and finally the fourth won by May Caswell was a lovely Christmas hamper donated by Margaret Yule.

Thursday 26th November
Talk by Sandra Thomson & David Wilkie entitled 'Jute Today' In his introduction David explained that
there are references to Jute going back to 600 BC, although no clear indications what it might have
been used for, but possibly that one might have been medical. He explained in the heyday Jute in the
city employed between 60,000/70,000 workers mainly female. In introducing where Jute is Today
Sandra said her great advantage was she lived in India for 15 years before coming to the UK and that is
where the raw product they use comes from, her abiltiy to speak the language was a great asset.
Whilst it is true Jute is still one of the ,ost used fibres today, second only to cotton, its uses are many
fold fold and today it is used for handbags to hats and from shrouds to palnt pots. All agreed the
contribution from Sandra and David was extremely interesting as well as entertaining.

Wednesday 25th November
Members of the Dundee Stroke Recovery Club committee attended the Veronica Assenit Citizenship
awards together with the Special Programmes Lifeskills 2 at Dundee College, Kingsway Campus
organised by their class tutor Paula Ewen. The culmination of the presentation was Claire Duff one
of the Special Programmes students presenting a cheque for £300 to Peter Whyte one of the committee.
The money had been raised at events in October when a signed Dundee United football and a mountain
bike where two of the main prizes. Prior to the presentation of the awards by Deputy Principal Grant
Ritchie Paula praised the students who had all been allocated individual roles in the orgnaistion of the
fund raising events and how they had all met their targets, but the winner of the pretigous Veronica
Assenti Citizenship award was Martin Buick, who she said had been her right hand man in all things
technical.
The presentation was attended by family and friends of the students including Carlo Assenti whose wife
set up this award and PC Gavin Munro from the Tayside Police who had given several talks to the students.

Thursday 5th November - Susan Dye and Cheque presentation
Susan's presentation today was an afternoon or relaxtion and how using breathing techniques and certain
body movements so help members find 7th heaven.
The club also received two donations today from St. Martin's church in Derby Street for £102 raised at their
Harvest Thanksgiving service and also a further £200 from Jim and Phylis Crook who celebrated their
50th wedding aniversary on 5th September. Both Jim and Phylis had asked for financial contribution in
lieu of presents so they could make generous donations to both the Club and the Brain Injury Unit at the
Royal Victoria hospital.

Wednesday 21st - Charity Fund Raising at the Dundee College
Some members of the Dundee Stroke Recovery club visited the Dundee College, Kingsway Old Glamis
Road Campus to lend support to the Special Programmes students whose teacher is Paula Ewan, with
their day of fund raising with items from apples, cakes and chocolate being sold in parallel to the raffling
of such items as a signed football, mountain bike and a karaoke machine among many other items.
Paula's students were so enthusiastic some had to be persuaded to take a lunch break. The final total
raised will be presented to the club on 25th November at the student awards ceremony.

Friday 16th October - Charity Quiz Craigie Bowling Club
Members of the Dundee Stroke Recovery Club along with another 21 teams took part in a charity quiz
night raising funds for Ward 4 at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee on Friday evening in the Craigie Bowling
Club. Amongst the 22 teams competing were a number from the nursing staff at the Stroke ward.
The final out come was a total of £550 was raised and the quiz winners were 2nd Time Lucky with the
Stroke Me Better gaining the consolation prize of 4 Dundee Stroke Recovery pens. The event was organised
by Jim Irving who not so long ago was a patient in Ward 4. The event having been so successful will now be

Thursday 15th October - Who Wants to be a Millionire
Members of the Dundee Stroke Recovery club split into two teams namely the Eagles and the Eggheads to
compete in the well known TV quiz game Who Wants to be a Millionaire. The Eagles failed on their £250,000
question finishing only with £32,000 whilst the Eggheads went on to answer the final question, which city does
Tegel airport service and scoop for the first time ever the £1,000,000 prize.
Thursday 8th October - Silent Auction
In celebration of the 110 years since Chest, Heart and Stroke [CHSS] was founded in Scotland members of
the club held a fund raising silent auction realising £110 to be forwarded to them. Currently the issue of stroke awareness is being highlighted in a stand at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee.

Thursday 1st October - 12th Birthday Party
Members and friends of the Dundee Stroke Recovery club help celebrate that it has been 12 years since
the club was formed. The music was supplied by Ken Stewart and the singers all club members were Maureen Crighton; Cathie Quinn and Ethel Williams who entertained all those present. All were served
with sausage rolls; sandwiches and cakes along with a slice of the club's special birthday cake and
during the proceedings a raffle amongst those attending raised £110 for club funds.

On Tuesday 22nd September the club received a substantial donation of £691 raised by the previous 2nd year
students from the College who wer part of the Special Programmes Section whose teacher was Paula Ewan.
The money was raised in honour of Paula's mother who suffered a stroke but died before the money could be~
fully spent. The Club was represented by Peter and Wilma Whyte along with Chairwoman Maureen Crighton.

Thursday 7th May - Sian Russell

Members of the Dundee Stroke Recovery Club were given a short introduction by Sian Russell
into her research project with the University of Dundee entilted "Reintegration after a Stroke"
The meeting was chaired by Bill Blyth who thanked Sian for giving up her time to come along and
explain more about this research and answer the questions that were asked.
Thursday 23rd April - Alison Christie

Members of the Club welcomed today Alison Christie, Community Health Worker giving a talk entitled
"Physicl Activities" which was followed by 10 mins of exercising anyone even one house bound could
do. The meeting was chaired by Maureen Crighton and a vote of thanks was given by Mabel Elder.
Thursday 2nd April - How Many ?

Members took part in How Many ? Led by Christine Blyth, club secretary, where they had to make
various guesses from teddy bears eyes; flowers in the garden and to smarties in a jar. The winner
was Jim Crighton and runners-up were Margaret Yule & Cathie Quinn.
Thursday 26th March
The Dundee Stroke Recovery club held its Annual General Meeting today and the officers elected
to serve for two years were Chairwoman Maureen Crighton; Vice Chair Bill Blyth; Secretary Christine
Blyth and the Teasurer Margaret Yule. The committee elected to serve for a one year period were Mabel Elder; Cathie Quinn; Alice Smythe; Peter & Wilma Whyte. The members thanked Isobel Stuart for all
her work on the committee and a special thanks to Sheila Stewart neither of whom were restanding. The work
of Sheila Stewart has been a pivotable role in the development of the club and her work is second
to none both in the work and commitment she has given to the club and for these and many other reason
Sheila has been made an Honorary Vice President. At the close of the meeting Dr Ronald MacWalter,
President of the club and Consultant Physician in Acute Stroke Medicine at Ward 4 in Ninewells also paid
tribute the the dedication and enthusism that Sheila has shown and went on to advise on the current ongoing work of the staff and nurses in Ward 4 were all playing their part in the area of further stroke research.

Thursday 5th March - "Seeing Dundee Through the Archives"

Michael Bolik from the Archive Services at University of Dundee gave a talk entilted "Seeing Dundee
through the Archives". All agreed the range of the presentation showed all the aspects of the
university and the town and featuring the Jute industries; Centuries old registry informtion and
some really old medical records from the days of the Dundee Royal Infirmary. The meeting was
chaired by Maureen Crighton and a vote of thanks to Michael was proposed by Christine Blyth.
Thursday 26th February - Healthy Eating

The Healthy Eating Chart Christine; Maureen and Susan Dye
Members received a very interesting talk from Mabel's daughter Susan on all the facts to ensure
everyone is aware of the correct foods and how they can help to give you a properly balanced diet.

Thursday 5th February - Silent Auction

The auction attracted a wide range of items from jewellery to watches and although the bad
weather meant a lower than usual attendance the sum of £78 was still raised for club funds.

To celebrate the 250th anniversary of Robert Burns the Dundee Stroke Club organised a burns meal
for their members including the usual haggies; tatties; neeps; shortie and cheese all prepared by our
two committee members Peter & Wilma Whyte assisted by their daughter Lisa and served up by the
other committee members. The Selkirk Grace was was given by Christine Blyth and the music was
supplied by the well known Scottish entertainer Billy Anderson from St.Andrews.
Margaret Yule proposed the vote of thanks to all for what was a very enjoyble afternoon.
